God Almighty—did you know Donald Trump has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and George Clooney doesn’t? Makes sense.
Anyway...
It’s Sunday again. I moved to the beach. So did the girlfriend, the dog, the cat, and all our shit. I drove a wonky, overloaded U-Haul from Atlanta to Destin, Florida and—regrettably—did not stop at Buc-ee’s. Sinner.
The first night at the beach, we went to a restaurant overlooking the ocean for our inaugural happy hour cocktail. As we walked in, a dude turned the corner and kicked me in the leg. Then, one of the two massive bouncers carrying him out punched him in the face so hard I swear it shook the building. I bet he shattered every bone in that guy’s face.
Welcome to the beach.
Speaking of combat sports…
Here’s what I learned this week:
1. Obsession is the key to success.
2. Obsession is the key to success.
I listened to two outstanding podcast episodes this week while driving that U-Haul full of useless stuff—both featuring men who told their fascinating stories, their unbelievable success, their radical obsession.
They were, in no particular order, Jimmy Fallon and Chatri Sityodtong. Sure, you probably can’t pronounce the second guy’s name and neither can I but his story is fantastic.
Jimmy Fallon was on The Diary of a CEO podcast and said he knew he wanted to be on Saturday Night Live when he was five. It was the only thing he ever wanted. So much so, he told the host Stephen that he decided he’d kill himself if he didn’t make it onto SNL by age 25.
Well, that’s one way to chase your goals I suppose.
He was obsessed. It worked. He won. He made it on the show at 24.
Then there's the guy with the unusual name—Chatri. He founded ONE Championship, a combat sports promotion similar to UFC. His story? Simple:
“I am obsessed with martial arts and have been my entire life.”
Oh, and he grew up in Thailand. His dad went bankrupt and left the family. They were dirt poor.
Somehow, Chatri made it to Harvard. They were so broke, he snuck his mom into his dorm to live with him. She slept in the bed. He slept on the floor. No money. No backup plan.
I’m not even a martial arts guy, but that interview? Outstanding. He’s a master storyteller—and his journey is one of the most inspiring I’ve ever heard. Thailand to Wall Street to sports.
I highly recommend both episodes. I linked them at the bottom of this fabulous newsletter.
The lesson: The path to mega success is paved with purpose and passion.
Purpose + Passion = Obsession
So I ask myself, am I doing the one thing I love more than anything else?
Are you?
Let’s go.
